Iron Crown Women: Weibel wins every leg, wire to wire

Five women took on the full Iron Crown — the IFC, the 46K, and the 23K, summed into one brutal combined time — and Amber Weibel never gave the rest of them a moment's hope. The 48-year-old from South Lake Tahoe was the fastest woman on every single leg, opening with a 1:07:15 on the IFC that put nearly 14 minutes into Sarah Malone before the weekend had barely begun. She then dropped a 6:02:53 in the 46K — more than an hour clear of anyone else's leg time in this field — and closed with a 2:55:30 in the 23K to seal a 10:05:39 total and a wire-to-wire crown.

Behind her, the order after the IFC never changed: Weibel, Malone, Basham, at every checkpoint. Malone, 45, of Superior, Colorado, was the clear second-best all-rounder — 2nd on the IFC at 1:21:14, then 7:11:28 and 3:26:44 on the long legs — finishing at 11:59:27, nearly two hours ahead of the podium's final step.

That final step produced the crown's best duel. Alisha Basham banked her advantage early, her 1:31:49 IFC putting more than 22 minutes on Alison Bassett's 1:54:10. Bassett fought back on the 46K, running it seven minutes faster (8:28:52 to 8:35:54), but Basham reasserted control in the 23K, 3:46:27 to 4:05:58, and took 3rd by 34:51.

Stephanie Sibille of Granby, Connecticut, rounded out the crown in 5th at 16:46:42 — and notably out-split 4th-place Bassett on the IFC, 1:39:23 to 1:54:10, before the two long legs tipped the balance. Five starters, five finishers, three mountain races apiece: everyone who took on the Iron Crown got it done.
