Women's UTMB Ultra Trail: Kaspersen's Late Surge Rewrites the Race

• Jennifer Lichter owned the brutal Arnouvaz→Grand Col Ferret climb with the fastest women's split on that segment, locking in 4th overall in 12:24:06.

Miao Yao came out of Courmayeur flying. The 30-year-old moved into the lead among women by the second checkpoint and held it, or sat just behind it, through much of the race's middle third — a commanding front-running performance across 108 km of Italian and Swiss terrain. But ultra racing across 6,200 meters of climbing has a way of collecting its debts late, and by the final checkpoints Yao had slipped to 3rd, where she'd finish in 12:15:46.

Toni McCann was the model of patience and precision. Starting 9th among women, she moved to 2nd by the second checkpoint and never strayed far from the front — her fastest women's split on the Refuge Bertone→Refuge Bonatti leg underlined her strength on that stretch of the course. She crossed in 12:06:19, a full 9:27 clear of Yao, and held 2nd to the line. The title, though, belonged to someone who'd taken a very different route to it.

Yngvild Kaspersen's race chart is unlike any other in the top ten. She was 12th among women at the first checkpoint, slipped to 19th at the second, then began one of the most dramatic climbs of the day — 11th, 10th, 3rd, and finally 1st. The 31-year-old Norwegian's fastest women's split on the Champex-Lac sortie→Trient segment was the move that brought her within striking distance, and she never looked back, finishing in 12:01:19 at 10:45/mi to claim the win.

Behind the podium, Caitlin Fielder delivered the field's 2nd-fastest women's split on that same Champex-Lac sortie→Trient leg — her own late surge carrying her from 12th at mid-race to 5th in 12:25:22. Adeline Martin, at 42, reached 8th in 12:45:43, and Theres Leboeuf, 41, rounded out a strong veterans' showing in 10th at 12:58:52. All told, 392 women finished the point-to-point journey from Courmayeur to Chamonix — a race that, at its front, turned on who had the most left when the mountains ran out.
