American River 50 Miler 10-Mile: Vaira dominates the F30-39 field

Sarah Vaira made this one look straightforward. The 32-year-old from Sacramento ran 9:55 per mile across ten miles of Auburn trail, never relinquishing her lead among the women — she held the top women's spot from the first checkpoint to the finish line. The margin she built was no accident: on the final Last Gasp→Finish segment, she posted the fastest women's split in the entire field, closing harder than anyone else in skirts. A 20-minute winning gap over a competitive age group speaks for itself.

Behind her, the real drama played out between Riessner and Jessup. Martina Riessner (34, Port Moody, BC) crossed in 1:59:28, with Clara Jessup (31, Mountain View, CA) arriving just 73 seconds later at 2:00:41. Both women held their positions among the broader women's field throughout — Riessner 5th among women, Jessup 6th — and neither could shake the other. Riessner did have a slight edge on the closing segment, posting the 5th-fastest women's Last Gasp split to Jessup's 6th, but it wasn't enough to dramatically alter the gap.

Carolyn Collins (35, Windsor) came home 4th in the age group at 2:27:16, followed by Shanna Gruszie (39, Sacramento) at 2:46:33 — the oldest finisher in the group and the last to crack the top five. Adrienne Butler, Holly Classon, Sulagna Sahu, and Whitney Butler rounded out the nine, with Butler and Sahu separated by just under two minutes at the back of the field. On a clear, cool April morning in Auburn, all nine got it done.
