Women's Marathon: Carstens Wires It from Gun to Tape in 31-Degree Dallas Wind

• Allison Carroll's second-half surge earns her the 2nd-fastest women's split from the halfway point to the finish, moving from 5th at the midpoint all the way to 2nd place in 2:54:48 — just 48 seconds behind Carstens.
• Lauren Van Allen, 45, finishes 3rd in 2:57:17, posting the 2nd-fastest women's split from 5K to 10K and holding the runner-up spot through much of the middle miles before Carroll's late charge pushed her back.
• Carlyn Bobo's closing kick — 7th-fastest women's split over the final 36K-to-finish stretch — drove her from 11th at the opening checkpoint all the way to 4th in 3:01:17.

Conditions at Dallas City Hall on race morning were unforgiving: 31°F with a 24 mph wind cutting across the course. That backdrop makes what Carstens, a 21-year-old from Olympia, WA, produced all the more striking. She sat at the front from the very first checkpoint and never relinquished it, clocking the fastest women's split through the 5K-to-10K segment and running 6:38/mi from start to finish. In a field of 1,189 women, nobody came close to matching that early rhythm.

The race's most compelling sub-plot belonged to Carroll and Van Allen. Van Allen, 45, from McKinney, TX, was the early aggressor — posting the 2nd-fastest women's 5K-to-10K split and holding second place through the heart of the race. But Carroll, 35, from Fort Worth, was biding her time. She was still 5th at the halfway point, then began picking off competitors one by one, riding the 2nd-fastest second-half split in the women's field to cross in 2:54:38 and claim 2nd — just 48 seconds behind Carstens. Van Allen held on for 3rd in 2:57:17, a strong finish for the oldest woman on the podium by more than a decade.

Behind the podium, the late charges kept coming. Shiho Endo, 36, from Sendai, Japan, ran the 4th-fastest second-half women's split to climb from 15th at the opening checkpoint to 5th in 3:01:40. Bobo, 21, from Montreat, NC, was even more dramatic — 11th through the first checkpoint and still 7th with six miles to go, before her 7th-fastest closing split lifted her to 4th in 3:01:17. The top ten was packed tight, with Daniela Marcela Arellano Gomez (6th, 3:01:57), Maddy Walter-Sherretts (7th, 3:02:32), and Haley Bell (8th, 3:02:39) all finishing within the same minute.
