• Late-race surge: Linkletter and Hauger both ran the fastest and second-fastest splits on the 30K→40K stretch among the men, vaulting from 7th and 8th at 30K to lock up the 2nd and 3rd steps of the podium.

Brendan Gregg ran a composed, measured race — but not a passive one. He briefly ceded the lead around the 5K mark before reclaiming it by the half and never letting it go. His fastest-among-the-men split from 15K to the half was the move that set the tone, and his 5:01/mi average held firm across the full 26.2 miles in near-ideal Sacramento conditions: 57°F, a light 4 mph breeze, and overcast skies that kept the sun off the field.

Behind Gregg, the race's most compelling subplot belonged to the Flagstaff duo. Rory Linkletter (2:12:52) and Nick Hauger (2:12:59) sat in the pack through 30K — both around 7th–8th place — then unleashed the two fastest splits in the men's field over the 30K-to-40K stretch. That surge delivered them both to the podium with a combined gap of just seven seconds. Milton Rotich (4th, 2:13:16) and Will Nation (5th, 2:13:24) also ran strong closing legs, with Rotich posting the 3rd-fastest men's split from the half to 30K and Nation matching that rank from 30K to 40K.

JJ Santana's 7th-place finish in 2:14:16 was a significant step forward from his 10th here in 2019 (2:17:26), a 3:10 improvement on the same course. Albertson's 8th in 2:14:45 — while well off his 2019 runner-up time — still placed him solidly in a field that had six men break 2:14. Across the full 30-man Elite Men's field, the racing was deep and honest, with 20 named finishers all inside 2:19.
