M70-74: Galan edges McGourty in a battle of the septuagenarians

Laureano Galan of Cicero held the upper hand from the start and never relinquished it, winning the M70-74 group in 1:51:45 at an 8:31/mi clip across a warm Chicago morning — 72°F with a 10 mph wind that offered little mercy. He navigated the men's field steadily, moving from 959th among men at the 10K mark all the way up to 899th by 15K before settling back slightly to 909th at the finish. It was a controlled, measured effort that proved just enough.

Bernard McGourty of Westmont made it interesting. He was further back in the men's field early — 1,164th at 10K — but ran the second half with genuine purpose, climbing all the way to 974th by the finish line. That closing 15K-to-finish split ranked 839th in the field, the sharpest finishing kick of anyone in the M70-74 group. He crossed in 1:52:57, just 1:12 behind Galan. A minute and twelve seconds across 13.1 miles — that's a margin, but not a comfortable one.

Behind the top two, Riaz Uddin of Chicago ran a solid 2:11:09 (10:00/mi) to claim third, finishing more than 18 minutes back but well clear of the final three. Gregorio Franco Atacio (2:25:34) and Edward Kostrzewa (2:29:32) ran closely matched races in fourth and fifth, separated by just under four minutes, while James Cavallo of Downers Grove rounded out the group in 2:35:38. Six men, all 70 years old, racing a half marathon in June heat — that alone is the story worth telling.
