Elite Women: Born runs down the field, Hall turns back the clock

• Molly Born, 26, climbed from 7th to 1st in the elite women's race — 2:24:09 at 5:30/mi, powered by the fastest women's split from 5K→10K.
• Sara Hall, at 42, took 2nd in 2:24:36 — never lower than 3rd at any checkpoint all day.
• Maya Weigel surged from 20th at the first checkpoint to 5th at the line (2:28:44), closing with the fastest women's split from 40K to the finish.
• Just 0.53 seconds split 18th and 19th: Breanna Sieracki (2:32:52.19) edged Erin Mcdonald (2:32:52.72), with Jenny Grimshaw one second back in 2:32:53.

On a near-perfect Sacramento morning — 46°F, overcast, barely a breath of wind — the elite women's race turned into a patient hunt. Megan Sailor did the early front-running, ripping the fastest women's split from 10K→15K and holding the lead through the middle of the race. But Molly Born was moving through the field the whole time: 7th, then 6th, then 3rd, and finally into the lead she never surrendered, stopping the clock at 2:24:09. Sailor paid for the front-running, slipping to 3rd in 2:25:16.

The runner-up story writes itself: Sara Hall, 42 years old, hit the first checkpoint in the lead and stayed in the mix all day — 2nd at halfway with the second-fastest women's split from 20K to the half, and 2nd across the line in 2:24:36, just 27 seconds shy of a runner 16 years her junior.

Behind the podium, the fight for 4th was ferocious. Lindsey Bradley (2:28:41), Maya Weigel (2:28:44), and Rebecca Schmitt (2:28:46) finished within five seconds of each other — and Weigel's was the wildest ride, having been 20th early before charging home with the fastest women's split over the final 2K+ of the course. Bradley, steady in 4th or 5th nearly the whole way, held her off by three seconds.

Further back, Annie Heffernan returned after taking 5th here in 2024 (2:30:26) and finished 12th this time in 2:30:51 — a testament to how deep this field ran. Deep indeed: this race sent 54 women under the Olympic Trials Qualifying standard, and in this elite group even 20th place, Jenny Grimshaw's 2:32:53, required sustained 5:50/mi pace.
