Fort Ord 10K F30-39: Kaitlin Davis Holds Off Jana Sipkova in a 20-Second Thriller

• Jana Sipkova, 30, of Pacific Grove, finishes 2nd in 57:40 — just 20 seconds back — after slipping from 2nd to 4th among women on the final Skyline→Finish segment.
• Meg Arnold's closing surge was the story of the back half: she vaulted from 20th to 11th among women on the Skyline→Finish leg with the 5th-fastest women's split on that segment, landing 4th in the age group at 1:03:02.
• Rebecca McKnight, 39, climbed from 25th to 14th among women on the closing leg to claim 5th in the age group at 1:05:12 — edging Mindy Day by a single second at 1:05:13.

Kaitlin Davis ran a composed, wire-to-wire race across the Fort Ord trails, holding 3rd among women the entire way and never relinquishing her grip on the age-group lead. Her 57:20 at a 9:14/mi clip was the class of the F30-39 field on a cool, breezy February morning in Monterey. Her 6th-fastest women's split on the Skyline→Finish stretch confirmed she finished strong rather than simply surviving the closing miles.

Jana Sipkova made it interesting. Also running 9:17/mi for 57:40, Sipkova had been sitting 2nd among women earlier in the race before fading slightly on the Skyline→Finish leg — her 9th-fastest women's split there was solid, but not quite enough to close the 20-second gap to Davis. The margin between 1st and 2nd in the age group was tight; the effort to get there was not identical, and Davis earned every second of it.

The real drama further back belonged to Meg Arnold and Rebecca McKnight, both of whom turned the final segment into a showcase of closing speed. Arnold, who had been 20th among women at one point, unleashed the 5th-fastest women's Skyline→Finish split in the entire women's field to finish 4th in the age group at 1:03:02. McKnight, the oldest on the podium at 39, charged from 25th to 14th among women to claim 5th in 1:05:12 — just one second ahead of Mindy Day's 1:05:13 in 6th.

Maya McElfish rounded out the podium in 3rd at 1:01:58 (9:58/mi), with a field of 27 women in the age group completing the race across a wide spread of finishing times, from the sub-58-minute battle at the front to a deep pack of competitors in the 1:13–1:22 range.
