In a two-woman F50-59 field on a cold, wet Sacramento morning — 51°F, light rain, and a 14 mph wind — Pam Smith turned in a performance that went well beyond her age group. Running at 7:40/mi across 31 miles, she sat 2nd among all women through the opening checkpoints before making her move. By the fourth checkpoint she had taken the overall women's lead, and she never let it go.

The engine behind that move was raw speed on the back half of the course. Smith posted the fastest women's split on both Lap 1 and Lap 2 — not just the fastest in F50-59, but the fastest among every woman in the field on those legs. That's the kind of finish that wins age groups and races outright.

Darlene Shimamoto ran her own disciplined race. She climbed from 10th among women at the first checkpoint to 8th by the Out & Back, then held that position all the way to the tape in 5:40:46. Her 8th-fastest women's split on the Out & Back segment shows she was competitive well beyond her age group as well. In a 50K on a miserable February day, finishing is its own achievement — but Shimamoto did it with consistency.
