Masters Female Marathon: Swift dominates while Reno rivals battle to the wire

• Anika Swift won the Masters Female race in 3:09:01 (7:13/mi), finishing 2nd among all women throughout — and posting the 2nd-fastest women's split on the Out & Back→Lap 1 segment.
• Stacy Anderson, 58, claimed 2nd in 4:08:43, holding 4th among all women from start to finish with the 4th-fastest women's split on Out & Back→Lap 1.
• Joy Toyias rounded out the podium in 4:12:27, just 3:44 behind Anderson after running 5th among all women on the opening segment.
• Melanie Jensen and Erika Goode — both from Reno — finished 5th and 6th separated by a single second: 5:44:51 to 5:44:52.

Anika Swift made the Masters Female race look like a solo time trial. The 40-year-old from Portland ran 7:13/mi through a cold, wet Sacramento morning — 51°F, light rain, 14 mph wind — and never wavered from 2nd among all women at any checkpoint. Her Out & Back→Lap 1 split was the 2nd fastest among the entire women's field, and she crossed in 3:09:01, nearly an hour clear of the next Masters finisher. That's not a race won at the front — that's a statement.

Behind Swift, the real competition was a battle of experience and endurance. Stacy Anderson, the field's eldest at 58, ran a composed 9:30/mi to finish in 4:08:43, holding her position among the women with the 4th-fastest split on the opening segment. Joy Toyias of Fair Oaks gave chase, running 9:38/mi to finish in 4:12:27 — close enough to keep it interesting, but Anderson never relinquished 2nd. Julia Croteau of Placerville came in 4th in 5:27:45, posting the 11th-fastest women's split on the Lap 1→Lap 2 segment as she moved up through the women's field across the back half.

Then came the finish-line drama the data barely contains. Jensen and Goode, teammates in city if not in stride, crossed within one second of each other after 26.2 miles in the rain — Jensen 5th in 5:44:51, Goode 6th in 5:44:52. Both averaged 13:10/mi. What separated them at the line was essentially the length of a shoelace.
