Men's Race Across the Sky: Macdonald Reclaims Leadville in 15:37

• Adrian Macdonald wins in 15:37:27 (9:22/mi), taking the men's title after previously winning here in 2022 and 2021 — three Leadville crowns in the editions we have.
• Matthew Zupan finishes 2nd in 16:04:30, the fastest men's split from mile 45.6 to 52.3 helping him lock up the runner-up spot he held for the final quarter of the race.
• Tim Tollefson claims 3rd in 16:33:24 (9:56/mi), closing with the 2nd-fastest men's split on the 78.7M→84.2M stretch to seal the podium.
• Mikey Mitch (4th, 17:36:38) and Corky Patton (5th, 18:54:56) round out the top five — Patton the biggest mover in the top ten, surging from 24th at the first checkpoint to 5th at the line.

Adrian Macdonald came to Leadville with something to prove — and numbers to back it up. The Fort Collins native, who won here in both 2021 and 2022, entered 2026 chasing a third buckle at altitude he knows better than almost anyone. He ran patiently early, sitting 5th at the first checkpoint, then moved through the field methodically: 3rd, then 2nd, and into the lead by the midpoint. He never relinquished it. His fastest men's split on the 8.6M→20.5M segment signaled early that his legs were ready, and his 9:22/mi average across 100 miles above 9,400 feet — including two crossings of Hope Pass at 12,500 feet — was decisive.

Zupan was the race's most compelling pursuer. Starting 11th, he crept forward steadily, reaching 5th by mile 52, then surging to 2nd with a scorching split from 45.6 to 52.3 miles — the fastest of any man on that stretch. He held 2nd for the final 48 miles, finishing in 16:04:30, a full 27 minutes behind Macdonald but 29 minutes clear of Tollefson. Tollefson, 41, ran one of the most consistent races in the field, sitting 4th from roughly mile 20 all the way through mile 78 before his late charge — the 2nd-fastest men's split on the 78.7M→84.2M segment — moved him to 3rd, where he finished in 16:33:24.

Behind the podium, the story belonged to Corky Patton. The Lone Tree runner was 24th at the first checkpoint and still 11th at the midpoint, but kept chipping away through the back half, eventually crossing in 18:54:56 for 5th. David Carpenter (6th, 18:54:42) technically crossed the line 14 seconds ahead of Patton in clock time but placed one spot behind — timing settled it. Further back, all 292 men who finished earned their Leadville belt buckle, completing 100 miles through some of the thinnest air in ultramarathon racing.
