Masters Women 10K: Norris surges from the back to claim the crown

Andrea Norris of Minneapolis had work to do early. She was sitting 57th among women at the first mile marker, a position that would have left her well outside the Masters podium. But she was moving — by the 3-mile mark she had surged to 18th among women, and she kept pressing all the way to the tape. That closing 3M→Finish leg was where Norris truly separated herself: her 11th-fastest women's split on that stretch was the engine that drove a 44:18 finish at 7:08/mi, a pace no other Masters woman could match on the day.

Cara Hansen of Austin, MN ran a steadier race to claim second in 45:14 (7:17/mi), moving from 21st to 16th among women across the course and posting the 17th-fastest women's closing split — a strong finish in her own right, just outgunned by Norris's surge. Heather Luberts of Rice, MN earned third in 46:02 (7:25/mi), her best work coming on the 1M→3M segment, where she posted the 17th-fastest women's split in the field. Right on her heels, Meredith Boorsma of Scandia, MN crossed in 46:03 — one second back — having run the 19th-fastest women's split on that same middle stretch after climbing from 31st to 20th among women.

Missy Trenz of Becker, MN rounded out the top five in 46:47 (7:32/mi), while Elizabeth Williams of Saint Louis, MO was sixth in 46:58 — the only out-of-state finisher in the top six. The depth behind them was real: Michelle Thompson (7th, 47:35) through Amanda Duerr (20th, 49:14) compressed into under two minutes, a testament to how competitive this field was across 567 finishers on a warm, breezy morning along Summit Avenue.
