Rocket City Marathon F15-19: Monica Lady runs away with it in the cold

• Monica Lady wins in 3:28:34 (7:57/mi), finishing nearly 22 minutes clear of runner-up Ella Langford (3:50:26).
• Lady climbed from 69th to 32nd among women over the course of the race, posting the 18th-fastest women's split on the 20M→Finish stretch — one of the stronger closing legs in the women's field.
• Nora Conway, 17, of Nashville rounded out the podium in 3:57:04, the only out-of-state finisher in the top three.
• A tight three-way cluster at 8th–10th: Lily Shah (5:43:32), Lucy Zhang (5:43:33), and Meredith Walker (5:43:36) — 15-year-old Walker the youngest in the age group — finished within four seconds of each other.

Twenty-nine degrees, a 16-mph wind, and clear skies greeted 13 finishers in the F15-19 age group at Rocket City — and Monica Lady, 18, of Toney, AL, treated the conditions like a non-factor. Running 7:57/mi across 26.2 miles, she entered the women's field at 69th place through the early miles and steadily picked her way through the pack, reaching 32nd among women by the finish. That relentless forward movement was backed up by one of the stronger closing splits in the field: her 20M-to-finish leg ranked 18th among all women, a sign that she was running her best when others were fading.

Ella Langford, the hometown runner from Huntsville, earned 2nd in 3:50:26 (8:47/mi), climbing from 119th to 83rd among women with her own strong late push — the 54th-fastest women's closing split. Nora Conway, 17, made the trip from Nashville worthwhile with a 3:57:04 (9:03/mi) to claim 3rd, her closing split ranking 78th among women. The gap between Langford and Conway was just under seven minutes, while the margin from Conway back to 4th-place Emilia Accardi (4:23:30, 10:03/mi) was considerably larger.

The back half of the field told its own story. Natalie Grimes (4:26:05) and Molly Walker (4:33:59) rounded out the top six, while the race's most remarkable sequence came at 8th through 10th: Lily Shah (5:43:32), Lucy Zhang (5:43:33), and 15-year-old Meredith Walker (5:43:36) crossed within a four-second window after more than five and a half hours of running. Rebecca Doiron (6:11:12), Vivian Helms (6:12:59), and Katherine Carlisle (6:58:42) completed the 13-finisher group — every one of them covering 26.2 miles on a frigid December morning in Huntsville.
