On a cool, humid August morning in Santa Rosa — 52°F with 91% humidity — the Masters Women's field of 182 delivered one of the sharpest back-half battles of the day. Danielle O'Brien entered the second half sitting 1st among women overall, and she held her form where others faded, posting a 7:00/mi average and the 10th-fastest women's second-half split to cross in 3:03:39. Nobody in the Masters Women's field came close to matching that sustained pace.

The real drama behind her was a reshuffling of the entire top five. Katie Valdes (49, Altadena) ran the 8th-fastest women's second-half split in the field — a genuine surge — climbing from 11th among women to 7th to finish 2nd in Masters in 3:05:41. Shari Costanzo (49, Napa) held relatively steady, moving from 7th to 8th among women and finishing 3rd in 3:06:44. Meanwhile Angela Shoniker (49, Whistler, BC) and Elisa Caredio (49, San Jose) both faded slightly in the women's standings — Shoniker from 6th to 10th, Caredio from 8th to 11th — but their pace held well enough to claim 4th (3:07:18) and 5th (3:09:18) in Masters. Four of the top five are 49 years old.

Further back, a subplot of its own: Bobeya Krishnek (40, Seattle) and Colby Bolesta (48, Dallas, PA) ran the entire race so evenly matched that just three seconds separated them at the finish — 3:21:33 to 3:21:36 — for 6th and 7th. Nami Kato (41, Rancho Cordova) followed in 8th at 3:25:51, with Megan Bordi (46, Washington, DC) and Polly Feyereisn (41, Aptos) rounding out the top ten in 3:26:26 and 3:27:20 respectively.
