Masters Women at Santa Rosa: O'Brien Runs Away with It

• Danielle O'Brien (Sacramento, CA, age 43) won the Masters Women field in 3:02:17 — a 6:57/mi average that put her comfortably clear of 2nd place by more than seven minutes.
• Paige Yellen (Mineola, NY, age 48) was a strong runner-up in 3:09:43 (7:14/mi), finishing 11th among all women.
• The podium's 3rd, 4th, and 5th places were decided by just 20 seconds: Melissa Peterson (3:24:06), Isabel Diaz (3:24:20), and Staci Morrison (3:24:26) — all three averaging 7:47–7:48/mi.
• Jennifer Hoogesteger of Concord, CA finished 7th in the Masters Women field at 3:28:07 — a notable performance at age 54 in a field dominated by athletes in their early 40s.

Danielle O'Brien made her move count in the second half. Peterson (3:24:06) had the edge, but it was Morrison who ran the strongest second half of the trio, posting the 38th-fastest women's split on that stretch to Diaz's 47th. Peterson's 36th-fastest back-half split kept her just ahead, making those final miles a genuine catch-up race that Peterson held off.

Rounding out the top 20, Ling-Yuan Kong of Houston turned in one of the day's most quietly impressive performances — finishing 17th in the Masters Women field at 3:41:26 at age 62, in a race where the flat, fast Sonoma County course rewarded those willing to trust their fitness through 26.2 miles of wine country roads.
