She held 17th among all women through the first half before settling at 18th at the finish, a reflection of how steadily she ran rather than any late fade. Behind her, the race for the podium was genuinely tight. Valerie Teany (Helena, MT) came home in 25:45 for second, with Maria Eliane (Memphis) just three seconds back in 25:48 for third. Both ran the closing segment at nearly the same 8:17–8:18/mi clip, and their finishing positions tell the story — Teany held 27th among women, Eliane 29th. The gap between them was real but razor-thin; three seconds over 5K is a very small margin to defend.

The most interesting move in the top five belonged to Cheryl McKenzie. She sat 40th among women at the 1.55-mile mark and surged home with the 32nd-fastest women's closing split to finish 4th in 26:04 — passing seven women in the final stretch. Wendy Chester (5th, 26:11) had been 23rd among women at that same checkpoint but couldn't sustain it, posting only the 46th-fastest closing split as McKenzie ran her down. The race ran through the St. Jude campus at the halfway point — fitting, given this event is the hospital's largest single-day fundraising occasion — and 1,409 Masters women finished on the day.
