M40-49: Rodriguez Runs Away with It

• Gabriel Rodriguez (age 46, Mercer Island WA) won the M40-49 group in 1:16:52 — a 7:41/mi average that left the field nearly 11 minutes behind.
• Jeff Auwinger (age 46, Loomis CA) held 2nd from start to finish, crossing in 1:27:55 — a comfortable 10:03 gap back to Rodriguez, but a similarly comfortable 27-minute cushion over 3rd.
• The race for 4th was the tightest battle of the day: Adam Donaton and Michael Mccandless finished in 1:57:36 and 1:57:40 — just four seconds apart after 10 miles.
• Mccandless made the biggest move of the back half, climbing from 21st to 16th among the men between the opening checkpoint and the finish, posting the 8th-fastest HWY 49→Finish split in the men's field.

Gabriel Rodriguez made this race look straightforward. Running 7:41 per mile across 10 miles on a warm March morning in Cool, CA, he led among the men from the first checkpoint to the last and added the fastest Fire Station→HWY 49 split in the men's field for good measure. Marcos Mejia (age 41) rounded out the podium in 1:54:56, more than 27 minutes behind Auwinger but a clear 2:40 ahead of the 4th-place battle brewing behind him.

That battle was worth watching. Donaton and Mccandless ran nearly identical races — both averaging 11:46/mi — but Mccandless got there the harder way, working through traffic from 21st among the men at the first checkpoint all the way to 16th by the finish. Donaton, meanwhile, held a steadier line but couldn't shake him, and four seconds separated them at the line.

The back half of the M40-49 field spread out considerably, with times ranging from Michael Schoeck's 2:00:55 in 6th to Alex Sanchez's 3:03:27 in 15th — a 62-minute window across just ten finishers. All 15 men got it done on a clear, 63°F day that offered few excuses and rewarded anyone willing to push.
