With temperatures reaching 73°F under a clear Auburn sky, the M20-29 group was a four-man battle across 25 miles of American River trail — and Zachary Heberlein, just 21 years old out of Fair Oaks, made it look like his personal training run. He led among the men from the very first checkpoint to the last, never relinquishing his position, and posted the fastest Granite Bay→Rattlesnake Bar split in the men's field to underline exactly where this race was won. His 3:58:27 finish at 9:32/mi was the only sub-five-hour effort in the age group by a wide margin.

Andrew Bowers, 27, from Galt told a different story — one of relentless forward progress. Starting well back in 15th among men, he moved to 10th by mid-race, then 6th, and ultimately finished 5th among men overall, landing 2nd in M20-29 at 5:01:13. His 12:03/mi average reflects a patient, building effort, and he backed it up with the 2nd-fastest Last Gasp→Finish split in the men's field — a strong close when many were fading in the heat.

Collin Hensley, 26 (Folsom), ran the opposite arc. He entered the race in 5th among men and gradually slipped to 11th by the finish, crossing in 5:29:40 at 13:11/mi for 3rd in M20-29. It wasn't a collapse — just a day where the course and conditions gradually took their toll. Victor Mendoza, 23 (Roseville), completed the group in 7:07:25, a 17:06/mi effort that represented a full 1:37:45 behind Hensley — a reminder that on a 25-mile trail race in the California heat, every finisher earns it.
