• Just 2:09 separated 1st through 3rd: Mtuy (2:58:13), John Beadell (3:00:22), and Paul Sweeney (3:01:28) ran one of the tightest podiums in the field.
• Sweeney posted the strongest High Camp→Finish split among the top three, logging the 85th-fastest split on that closing leg across all men — edging Mtuy's 77th-fastest on the same stretch.
• 19 minutes back to 4th: Chris Randall's 3:06:52 left a notable gap behind the podium trio, underscoring just how closely matched the top three were relative to the rest.

Simon Mtuy set the tone from the gun. Starting outside the top 100 among the men, he steadily picked his way through the field — moving from 127th to 120th to 112th and ultimately 103rd among men by the finish. That kind of progressive, disciplined climb through the field, on a course that tops out near 8,900 feet, speaks to controlled pacing rather than an early blowout. At 12:28 per mile over terrain this technical and this high, sub-3:00 is genuinely earned.

The real drama was the battle for 2nd and 3rd. John Beadell (age 55, Sparks, NV) held a steady mid-field position among the men throughout, crossing at 3:00:22. Paul Sweeney (age 58, Truckee, CA) — racing essentially in his backyard — ran the more aggressive second half, surging from 156th to 115th among men over the course of the race. His finishing leg was the sharpest of the trio, but Beadell had banked just enough time earlier to hold him off by 66 seconds for 2nd. Sweeney's 3:01:28 still earns a well-deserved podium at 58 years old.

Behind the top three, the M50-59 field spread out considerably. Chris Randall (4th, 3:06:52) and Tim Briley (5th, 3:24:18) were separated by over 17 minutes, and places 6 through 7 — John Pullara (3:25:38) and Christian Lepley (3:26:09) — were separated by just 31 seconds. Forty-eight men finished the M50-59 group in total, navigating cool but clear conditions at altitude — ideal racing weather, if the thin air above 7,500 feet ever truly is.
