Iron Face 5-Miler: Wiest is the only man under the hour

• Jason Wong (44) edged Daniel Cirstoveanu (31) by 23 seconds for 5th, 1:17:36 to 1:17:59
• Chris Bassett, at 56 the oldest man in the top eleven, ran 1:30:21 for 11th

Five miles on the Iron Face doesn't sound like much until you factor in the setting: a course climbing between roughly 6,220 and 7,191 feet, with 91-degree heat and a 14 mph wind for company. Average paces across the men's field tell that story — even the winner needed 11:38 per mile, and only the top four broke 14-minute pace.

Brian Wiest of Wallingford, Pennsylvania made the win emphatic. His 58:12 put him 4:37 clear of the field — the only sub-hour finish among the 49 men — a decisive margin on a course this short. Behind him, the real fight was for the podium's remaining steps: Las Cruces' Keith Coombs, at 45, got there first in 1:02:49, with Truckee local Robert Schwartz just 12 seconds back in 1:03:01. Griffin Mims of Tahoe City took 4th in 1:08:06, five minutes clear of the next chase.

That next chase was its own drama: Jason Wong (1:17:36) and Daniel Cirstoveanu — who came all the way from Bucharest — separated by only 23 seconds for 5th and 6th. Nicholas Wankowicz (1:22:05, 7th) and Jonathan Dawson (1:23:42, 8th) followed, then a tight pairing of William Nguyen (1:28:51), Emmanuel Runes (1:29:59), and 56-year-old Chris Bassett (1:30:21) — three men across just 90 seconds for 9th through 11th.

Deeper in the field, the mountain extracted its toll in full: mid-pack finishers like James Precit (1:45:28, 13th), Elliot Koch (1:46:03, 14th), and Adam Vojta (1:46:41, 16th) clustered within a minute of each other above 21-minute miles, while Eric Norling (2:12:59, 19th) and Jack Oldham (2:13:57, 20th) ground through more than two hours in the heat. On a day like this, every one of those 49 finishes was earned.
