F55-59 at CIM 2024: Heaphy holds off a charging Smith to claim the age group

• Alison Heaphy (58, Troy, NY) won the F55-59 age group in 3:13:31 (7:23/mi), finishing just 39 seconds clear of runner-up Shannon Smith.
• Shannon Smith (58, Washington, DC) ran the strongest closing stretch of the podium, posting the 274th-fastest women's split on the 40K-to-finish segment as she nearly reeled in Heaphy.
• The top three were separated by only 1:44 — Heaphy (3:13:31), Smith (3:14:10), Liz Guerrini (3:15:15) — while 4th place Jennifer Fay was nearly six minutes back at 3:21:11.
• 126 women finished in the F55-59 age group, with the top 20 all breaking 3:46.

Alison Heaphy ran a controlled, progressive race. Starting the women's field around 493rd among women, she worked steadily forward through every checkpoint — 460th, then 441st, 420th, 381st — ultimately crossing the line 369th among women at a 7:23/mi clip. That kind of sustained, metronomic forward movement tells you she was running her own race and letting the field come back to her.

Shannon Smith had a different story to tell. She actually lost ground in the early going — sliding back to 490th among women before 10K — then spent the rest of the race clawing back. Her 274th-fastest women's split on the final 40K-to-finish stretch was the best closing kick on the F55-59 podium, and it nearly paid off. Thirty-nine seconds, though, is a gap that requires a surge to start sooner.

Liz Guerrini (56, Long Beach) rounded out the podium in 3:15:15, running consistently in the 419th–439th range among women through the middle miles. She couldn't match Smith's late charge but held 3rd comfortably. Behind the top three, Jennifer Fay (4th, 3:21:11) and Romney Resney (5th, 3:22:34) completed a solid top five, with Resney making her best move on the 25K–30K segment before settling at 574th among women for the final stretch.

With mild 59°F conditions and barely a breath of wind in Sacramento, the day was about as cooperative as a December marathon gets — and the F55-59 age group made the most of it, delivering a sharp, competitive race at the front.
