F1-19: Evan Kim, Age 12, Dominates the Youngest Women's Field

• Evan Kim, 12, wins in 2:55:49 (6:42/mi), finishing more than 15 minutes clear of runner-up Fionnula Carew (3:11:06).

The story of the F1-19 age group at the 2024 California International Marathon begins and ends with one remarkable 12-year-old. Evan Kim of Irvine ran 6:42 per mile across 26.2 miles to win in 2:55:49 — a margin of 15:17 over second place. Her movement through the women's field tells the story: she entered the 30K–35K segment ranked 212th among women and exited it ranked 117th, steadily hunting down runners twice her age throughout the second half.

Fionnula Carew made an early move, posting the 221st-fastest women's split on the opening 5K–10K segment and sitting well up the women's standings before gradually fading from 157th to 326th among women by the finish. Her Prescott training partner Mia Kemp ran the opposite race — starting conservatively near the back of the women's field and reeling people in, notching the 88th-fastest women's split on the final 40K-to-finish push to claim 3rd in 3:14:27. The two Prescott runners sandwiched the podium around Kim's dominant performance.

Behind the top three, the Indiana pair of Lily Spaulding (3:23:56) and Alysha Crouch (3:31:33) rounded out the top five, while Roseville locals Unique Hartke and Caterina van Zandt placed 6th and 10th respectively. At the back of the field, 11-year-old Izzy Dashow of Anchorage crossed in 4:02:54 — a full marathon finished before her 12th birthday, in conditions that kept even experienced runners honest. With 24 finishers ranging from age 11 to 19, this was one of the most age-diverse groups on the course.
