M70-74: Orjuela dominates a hot Chicago morning

• Alfonso Orjuela won the M70-74 group in 1:49:47 (8:22/mi), finishing more than 8 minutes and 35 seconds clear of runner-up Laureano Galan.
• Orjuela climbed steadily through the men's field all race long, moving from 1,797th among men at the first checkpoint to 1,154th by the finish — a gain of 643 places.
• Galan (1:58:22) and Daniel Blondin (2:01:16) were separated by just 2 minutes and 54 seconds for 2nd and 3rd, the tightest battle on the M70-74 podium.
• The spread from 1st to 15th was 1:29:49, with Christian Mendenhall rounding out the group at 3:19:36 (15:14/mi).

Fifteen men in their early 70s toed the line in Chicago on a legitimately tough morning — 79°F, 20 mph winds, and humidity low enough that it offered little relief. Under those conditions, Alfonso Orjuela of Northbrook ran a controlled and relentless race. His 8:22/mi average held firm from start to finish, and his trajectory through the men's field tells the story: he was already moving by the 10K mark and kept climbing every single checkpoint thereafter. By the time he hit the final stretch, he'd passed hundreds of runners to close as one of the stronger movers in the broader men's race.

The gap between Orjuela and everyone else in M70-74 was never really in question. Laureano Galan of Cicero ran a solid 1:58:22 for second, though his position among the men actually drifted backward as the race wore on — a sign the heat may have taken a toll in the second half. Daniel Blondin of Westmont was right behind him at 2:01:16, finishing strongly with one of the better closing splits in the group from 15K to the line.

From 4th through 6th, Riaz Uddin (2:06:28), Tom Dieschbourg (2:11:25), and Kyong Do Pang (2:14:03) each broke 2:15, all steadily working their way through the field in the back half. Gordon Hanson and Grant Kuphall finished 7th and 8th within 34 seconds of each other at 2:24:22 and 2:24:56 respectively — the closest pairing outside the podium. Credit to all 15 finishers for getting it done in genuinely difficult conditions.
