M40-44: Chelanga dominates, Baltrusch and Bocher battle for the podium

Sam Chelanga turned in one of the standout performances of the morning across any age group. Running 4:52 per mile through Chicago's streets, he crossed in 1:03:52 — a time that put him 10th among all men at multiple checkpoints and never wavered far from that mark. In a M40-44 field of 595, the margin he built over 2nd place wasn't a photo finish story; it was a statement.

Behind him, Baltrusch and Bocher made for a compelling subplot. Baltrusch (1:10:00) ran a tactically sharp race, surging on the 8K–10K segment to move up four spots among men in the final miles. Bocher (1:12:01) answered with his best running late, posting one of the sharpest 15K-to-finish splits in the men's field to hold off any threat from behind and secure 3rd.

The rest of the top ten was tightly packed. Jose Villasenor Altamirano (4th, 1:20:43) and Kyle Anderson (5th, 1:21:42) were separated by just 59 seconds, with Sean Gill (6th, 1:22:13) and Joseph Roeges (7th, 1:22:18) only 5 seconds apart. From 6th through 9th place, the spread was a mere 19 seconds — a genuine cluster where a single strong mile could have reshuffled the order entirely.

With 595 finishers, the M40-44 group was one of the deepest of the morning. The depth showed in the midpack too: positions 10 through 20 were compressed into a 2-minute window from 1:24:10 to 1:26:17, with Joel Clarke-Ames and Marcus Chiu sharing the identical 1:26:17 clock for 19th and 20th.
