From the opening miles, Devann Murphy of Keeseville, NY, and Jo Ann Outten Kenton of Harrington, DE, separated themselves from the rest of the field and never let go. Murphy led at every single checkpoint — 1st through 1st, start to finish — but Kenton was never more than a breath behind, clocking the fastest women's split on the 5K→10K stretch to keep the pressure on. Murphy answered with the fastest women's split on the 10K→15K leg, a decisive response that made clear she wasn't going to be passed.
