  • Winner: Tom Pitt, 44, Crystal, MN — 41:30 (6:41/mi), edging Joshua Short by just two seconds at the line
  • Closest battle: Short ran the middle miles faster than Pitt — 20th-fastest men's split on the 1M→3M stretch vs. Pitt's 26th — making up significant ground before falling just short
  • Age-defying depth: Wade Bergner, 56, claimed 3rd in 42:33 (6:51/mi), and Mark Otness, 62, cracked the top 10 with a 44:19 (7:08/mi)
  • Field size: 351 Masters Men finished on Summit Ave and up to the Minnesota State Capitol steps

Tom Pitt came to Saint Paul ready to race and left with the Masters Men title — but he had to earn every second of it. The 44-year-old from Crystal ran a steady 6:41-per-mile pace across the 10K, holding the lead through the back half of the course. Behind him, Joshua Short of Roseville was quietly turning the screws. Short ran the 20th-fastest men's split in the field through the 1M-to-3M stretch — four places sharper than Pitt's 26th-fastest on that same segment — and climbed from 41st among men at the first checkpoint all the way to 25th by the finish. He caught nearly everyone. He just couldn't quite catch Pitt, who crossed in 41:30 to Short's 41:32.

Third place went to Wade Bergner, 56, of Maiden Rock, WI, who is arguably the performance of the podium on a per-age basis. Bergner ran 42:33 at 6:51/mi, finishing a minute ahead of fourth-place Jonathan Plotz (42:40, 6:52/mi) of Minneapolis. Fifth went to Jason Dietsch of West St. Paul in 43:12. The top five were separated by under two minutes, making for a genuinely competitive lead pack on a warm October morning — 69°F with 76% humidity is no small ask at race pace.

The depth of this field is worth noting. Will Sutton, 59, of Minneapolis ran 44:09 (7:06/mi) for 9th, and Mark Otness, 62, of Edina cracked the top 10 with a 44:19. James Diers, Scott Adam, and a cast of 331 more Masters Men filled out a field that proved age is no barrier to racing hard down one of America's great running corridors.
