Tahoe Rim Trail 100: Boic Dominates M50-59 in a 23-Hour Masterclass

• Dennis Boic, 23:30:19 — wins M50-59 by nearly 4 hours over Chris Barber (27:26:39), the widest winning margin in the 15-man field.
• Ismael Macias staged the race's most dramatic climb: starting 107th among men, he worked his way to 29th by the finish — and posted the 3rd-fastest split on the Waterfall→Finish segment to seal 4th in 29:45:57.
• Naoya Okamoto (Yokohama) crossed 3rd in 29:15:16, making the M50-59 podium an international one — California, Nevada, and Japan all represented.
• The back half of the field compressed tightly: Yu-Yen Mo (34:45:42) and Chris Bassett (34:45:23) finished within seconds of each other in 10th and 11th, while places 12 through 15 were separated by just 34 minutes across four finishers.

Dennis Boic ran a race that belonged in a different conversation from everyone else in M50-59. The 50-year-old from Redding entered the men's field at 18th place early on, surged as high as 3rd, and ultimately settled at 4th among all men by the finish — a position he earned, in part, by posting the 3rd-fastest split on the Snow Valley Peak 2→Hobart 2 segment. At 14:06/mi across 100 miles of Tahoe terrain ranging up to 9,003 feet, Boic's pace was in a class of its own within M50-59, nearly two and a half minutes per mile faster than runner-up Chris Barber's 16:28/mi.

Barber, also 50 and racing from nearby Reno, ran a composed race — tracking steadily from 27th in the men's field down to 17th by the finish, and adding the 4th-fastest Snow Valley Peak 2→Hobart 2 split of any man. That the two fastest men on that segment both came from M50-59 is a notable footnote. Barber's 27:26:39 was a solid effort, but the gap to Boic was simply too large to bridge.

The real late-race story belonged to Ismael Macias. The 59-year-old from Lincoln, CA, was buried in the men's field — 107th at one checkpoint — and spent the entire race clawing forward. By the time he hit Waterfall→Finish, he had the 3rd-fastest split on that closing segment, vaulting from 47th to 29th among men and locking up 4th in M50-59 at 29:45:57. Franco Soriano (5th, 31:02:51) and Simeon Bukacek (6th, 31:29:42) rounded out the top six, while Jeremy Strange from Christchurch brought an international flavor to the back of the field, finishing 15th in 35:34:10 to close out a hard-earned M50-59 finisher's list.
