Masters Women 10K: Michels Surges Late to Take the Win

Jennifer Michels came to Fresno and ran like someone with a point to prove. Starting the final mile in 2nd among women, the Berkeley runner turned on the jets when it mattered most — her 1M-to-finish split was the 4th-fastest among all women in the field — and crossed in 41:50 at a 6:44/mi clip to claim the Masters Women title outright. The gap she opened was decisive: Lindsay Dozier finished 2nd in 46:44 (7:31/mi), nearly five minutes back.

Dozier's own closing segment was no slouch — she posted the 6th-fastest women's split on that final stretch and moved from 4th to 3rd among women in the process, but Michels was simply in a different gear. Behind Dozier, Jodie Konigsberg delivered the most dramatic charge of the top five, surging from 9th to 4th among women on the closing leg (7th-fastest women's split) to finish 3rd in 48:26. Marian Fiorentino, at 63 the oldest finisher in the top five, added her own late push — moving from 8th to 5th among women with the 8th-fastest closing split — and crossed in 49:03. Age was not a limiting factor for Fiorentino.

The battle for 5th through 9th was tightly bunched, with Devondria Sanchez (51:15), Katie Johnson (51:27), Sara Camoroda (53:27), Susan Bonds (53:50), and Cheryl Aleman (54:06) separated by less than three minutes across five spots. Johnson's return to this course was a success story in itself: her 51:27 bettered her 2023 time of 52:36 by over a minute, moving her from 9th among women that year into 6th in the Masters Women standings today. All told, 184 women finished the Masters race — a deep, competitive field from Fresno and the surrounding Central Valley.
