American River 50 10-Miler M60-69: Ferra Runs Away With It

• Joseph Ferra (1st, 2:12:32) averaged 13:15/mi to win the M60-69 group by a commanding 36-minute margin over Vince Bloom (2nd, 2:48:47).
• Vince Bloom gained three places in the men's field on the Rattlesnake Bar→Last Gasp segment, the most notable position move among the group's middle finishers.

Joseph Ferra made the M60-69 race his own from the start. The 60-year-old from Orangevale crossed in 2:12:32 at a 13:15/mi clip — a pace none of his four age-group rivals could answer. His closest pursuer, Vince Bloom, didn't reach the line until 36 minutes and 15 seconds later, which tells you everything about how decisive this win was. Ferra also posted the 17th-fastest split on the Last Gasp→Finish segment among all men in the race, a strong close to an already commanding performance.

Bloom, also 60 and out of Galt, ran a measured race of his own, clocking 2:48:47 at a 16:53/mi average. He actually picked up three places in the men's field between Rattlesnake Bar and Last Gasp — a genuine surge through that middle stretch — and held his ground to the finish. Bruce Tidrick (3rd, 3:19:43) out of Modesto ran a 19:58/mi average but faded slightly on that same Rattlesnake Bar→Last Gasp segment, slipping eight spots in the men's field before steadying.

At the back of the group, 67-year-old Nathan Sorenson from Yuba City finished 4th in 3:48:55 — the oldest finisher in the group and steady throughout, holding 41st in the men's field across the final two checkpoints. Tom Cooper of Citrus Heights rounded out the five-man group in 4:03:52, a 24:23/mi pace over a warm afternoon on the American River trails. Across the board, five men in their 60s got it done.
