The age group's most dramatic late-race story belonged to Verity Breen. The 59-year-old from San Rafael spent much of the afternoon buried between 8th and 10th among women, but she saved her best for last — posting the fastest women's split on the brutal Last Gasp→Finish stretch to finish 3rd in the age group at 10:19:15. Christy Mizer (4th, 10:42:23) also ran a strong closing segment, posting the 7th-fastest women's split on that same stretch. Behind them, Sara Marchi (11:59:05), Sarah Hansell (12:03:38), Lina Mccain (12:20:46), Jennifer O'Connor (12:52:08), and Cynthia Groom (13:43:30) all put 50 miles behind them on a warm California afternoon — no small feat in its own right.
