M50-59: Jon Kline Dominates the Fifties at American River 50

• Jon Kline, 50, wins the M50-59 group in 7:37:57 (9:10/mi) — nearly 50 minutes clear of 2nd place.
• Brian Miller, 50, holds 2nd in 8:27:28; Mark Blackwell, 56, rounds out the podium in 9:27:56 — a 1:00:28 gap between them.
• Scott Mann, 50, was the M50-59 comeback story, climbing from outside the top 25 in the men's field to 14th by the finish.

Jon Kline made the M50-59 race his own from early on. Starting near the front of the men's field in 2nd, he settled into 4th among men by the second checkpoint and never budged from that position the rest of the way home. His 9:10/mi average over 50 miles in 73°F heat is the kind of sustained output that leaves little room for doubt, and his winning margin of 49 minutes and 31 seconds over Brian Miller was decisive. He also posted the 5th-fastest split on the Willow Creek–to–Beals Point segment among the women's field — a strong indicator of how fluidly he was moving through that stretch.

Brian Miller, also 50 and from nearby El Dorado Hills, ran a measured race, tracking between 7th and 9th in the men's field for most of the day before finishing 7th among men in 8:27:28. His 10th-fastest Willow Creek–to–Beals Point split in the women's comparison shows he was still running with purpose on that segment. Behind him, Oakland's Mark Blackwell — at 56, the eldest on the podium — navigated a race of shifting positions, ranging from 10th to 15th in the men's field before closing strongly to finish 10th among men and 3rd in M50-59 at 9:27:56.

The most dynamic race-within-a-race belonged to Scott Mann of Rocklin. Starting deep in the men's field around 28th, he steadily picked off runners across the first half, cracking the top 20 among men by the midpoint and ultimately finishing 14th among men in 9:41:38. His 16th-fastest Granite Bay–to–Rattlesnake Bar split in the women's field comparison reflects where he was doing his best work. Jon Kalin, 59, and Tony Klink, 50, rounded out the top seven in M50-59 at 10:10:12 and 10:20:11 respectively, with the rest of a 22-strong field spread across the afternoon and into the evening.
