Dustin Needham of Oakley, CA, ran a controlled and commanding race across the Palisades Tahoe terrain, averaging 9:19 per mile over a course that climbs and rolls between roughly 6,200 and 7,500 feet. At that elevation, where thinner air can turn a hard effort into a punishing one, Needham never wavered — his 2:52 winning margin over David Youmans reflects a gap that opened and held firm through the finish.

Youmans (Mill Valley, CA) was the story of the final segment. He came into the Snow King→Finish stretch in 13th among men and closed to 10th, posting the 9th-fastest split on that leg across the entire men's field — a strong kick that earned him the runner-up spot on the M40-49 podium. Patrick Madigan of Louisville, CO rounded out the top three at 1:09:28, completing a podium where all three finishers were age 40.

The middle of the field offered its own drama.
