King actually held a stronger position than Hillberg heading into the Snow King→Finish segment, but Hillberg's closing split proved the sharper of the two — King faded from 115th to 125th among the women on that stretch while Hillberg moved from 123rd to 124th, and the final order reflected it: Hillberg 4th, King 5th.

Further back, Thomas Dicklin (42:57) and Hank Dart (42:58) staged their own miniature duel, separated by a single second at the line. Chad Lasater (44:21) and Brian Daly (44:29) added another close finish deeper in the field.
