Broken Arrow 5-Mile IFC — M40-49: Lynch Runs Away from the Field

• Goran Lynch, 41, wins in 54:01 — a 10:48/mi clip on a course topping 7,000 ft, finishing more than nine minutes clear of 2nd place.
• Brian Stephens (1:03:23) edges Luke Wachter (1:07:00) for the podium runner-up spot, with a 3:37 gap separating 2nd from 3rd.
• Tightest battle mid-pack: Ivan Valdes Castillo (4th, 1:10:11) and Garrett Mccullough (5th, 1:11:54) were separated by just 1:43 across five miles of high-altitude trail.
• Full field of 17 completed the course, spread across a 1:02:36 window from first to last.

Goran Lynch — a Tahoe City local — put on a masterclass at altitude. Running at 10:48/mi across a course that climbs into the thin air above 7,000 feet, Lynch crossed the line in 54:01, a margin so decisive that second place, Brian Stephens, wouldn't finish for another nine minutes and 22 seconds. Whether Lynch's Tahoe address gave him an acclimatization edge is unknowable, but the gap speaks for itself.

Stephens, 47, out of South Lake Tahoe, held off 40-year-old Luke Wachter (Berkeley) to claim 2nd in 1:03:23 to Wachter's 1:07:00. Stephens ran the faster race; Wachter, at 13:24/mi, couldn't quite close the deficit over five miles. Behind them, Ivan Valdes Castillo (1:10:11) and Garrett Mccullough (1:11:54) made for the afternoon's most entertaining chase — 1:43 separating 4th from 5th — with Dave Kirby (6th, 1:17:26) and Daniel Lynn (7th, 1:18:14) locked in their own 48-second duel just further back.

The back half of the field told a different story — one of grinding through the high-elevation course on a dry, breezy day. Jared Prolo (8th, 1:22:28) through Edgar Peralta (17th, 1:56:37) spread across more than 34 minutes, each finishing on their own terms. Joshua Toub (12th, 1:30:45) and Andrew Giorgianni (11th, 1:29:25) traded close finishes, while Peralta's 23:19/mi average reflects just how demanding this course can be at nearly a mile and a half above sea level. All 17 men finished — no small feat on terrain like this.
