Behind her, the real drama was a two-woman contest for 2nd. Marina Lepikhina (52, Crested Butte, CO) started conservatively — 119th among women through the first checkpoint — then unleashed one of the strongest mid-race surges in the age group, riding that 19th-fastest women's split on Snow King 1→Siberia 1 to vault into contention. Sandra Pinkowski (54, Truckee, CA) had been the more consistent presence through the early and middle segments, working steadily from 98th among women down to 51st before the final stretch. Lepikhina edged her at the line by 2:37 — a gap that felt narrow only because the race had taken nearly eight hours to run.
