M50-59 at Broken Arrow Skyrace 46K: Mtuy Dominates in the Thin Air

Simon Mtuy didn't just win M50-59 — he ran away from it. The 52-year-old from Moshi, Tanzania crossed in 6:05:29, a margin of more than 63 minutes over runner-up Seyil Yoon. What makes that gap even more striking is the altitude: with the course threading between 6,200 and 8,800 feet in cool, rainy conditions, sustaining a 12:47-per-mile average over 46 kilometers of mountain terrain is a serious athletic statement. Mtuy's move through the men's field tells the same story — he advanced steadily checkpoint by checkpoint, climbing from 71st to 42nd among men by the finish and picking off rivals across every segment of the course.

Yoon, racing on home turf in South Lake Tahoe, ran a controlled race of his own, moving from 132nd to 84th among men before a slight fade to 88th at the line. His 7:08:56 was a clear 2nd in M50-59. Muhlner (Washington, DC) was even more of a charger — entering the race in 194th among men, he worked his way up to 96th before finishing 98th, a remarkable positive trajectory through the field. His 7:20:05 secured 3rd in the group.

The race's sharpest subplot played out just behind the podium. Andrews and Woo spent much of the race trading positions — Andrews was ahead at most checkpoints, while Woo showed life on the final High Camp 2 to finish segment, posting the 58th-fastest split on that closing stretch. In the end it wasn't enough: Andrews held 4th by 11 seconds, 7:32:15 to 7:32:26. Behind them, Robert Verhees (58, San Diego) rounded out the top six in 7:42:27, with Jeff Huget and Keith Kennedy separated by just 90 seconds in 7th and 8th.
