Brandi Dawson of Westlake owned this race from the front. Running at 8:02/mi, she crossed in 1:45:24 and was never seriously threatened. The 3:39 margin over Janet Winslow (1:49:03, 8:19/mi) is a commanding cushion in any age group, and on a 75°F, 68%-humidity day in Cleveland, it's even more emphatic. Winslow herself ran steadily, holding her gender position at 151st from the 10K mark through the finish — consistent, if not a chaser.

The real drama unfolded behind them. Polly Hanff and Jodi Hall were both buried deep in the women's field at the 5K mark — 248th and 293rd among women, respectively — and spent the entire race climbing. Hanff got there via a 164th-fastest women's split on the second half, finishing 3rd in 1:50:56 (8:28/mi). Hall was even more aggressive through the 10K-to-12.6M stretch, posting the 157th-fastest women's split on that segment, and arrived at the line just 10 seconds back in 1:51:06 (8:29/mi).
