Women's 5K: Peterson Surges Late to Claim the Win at Minnesota's Capitol

• Cailee Peterson, 24, won the women's 5K in 17:32 (5:39/mi) — the fastest women's split from 1M to the finish sealed it.
• Lisa Mueller, 38, posted the 2nd-fastest closing split among the women to climb from 5th to 3rd, finishing in 18:50 — just four seconds behind runner-up Shona McCulloch's 18:46.
• Lynn Stiff made the biggest positional move in the top ten, surging from 9th to 5th with the 5th-fastest closing split, finishing in 20:47.
• Jennifer Mehta, 43, finished 8th in 21:19 — and had already claimed 3rd in the women's 10K earlier in the weekend, making her one of the busiest competitors on the Capitol grounds.

Cailee Peterson of Duluth didn't lead from the gun — she sat second through the opening mile — but she flipped the race on its head with the fastest closing split among all 1,316 women finishers, crossing in 17:32 at a 5:39/mi clip. That surge was enough to put clear daylight between her and the rest of the field, and no one could answer it.

Behind her, the battle for the podium was decided by who ran the second half harder. Shona McCulloch, also 24 and from Minneapolis, held on for 2nd in 18:46 with the 3rd-fastest closing split. But it was St. Paul's own Lisa Mueller, 38, who put on the most eye-catching chase — moving from 5th to 3rd with the 2nd-fastest closing split in the women's field, finishing in 18:50. The four seconds separating McCulloch and Mueller came down to Mueller simply not having quite enough road left after making up so much ground. Elizabeth Handschy held 4th throughout, finishing in 19:26.

Further back, the field told its own stories. Genevieve MacLachlan, just 11 years old from Edina, crossed 7th in 21:12 — a standout performance for a young runner on a competitive morning. Jill Ellenbecker, 51, from Coon Rapids, finished 13th in 22:08, separated from 12th-place Lizzie Wesser (22:07) by a single second. Wesser, for her part, was also pulling double duty — she had finished 8th among women in the 10K, making her 12th-place 5K finish part of a full Twin Cities Marathon Weekend effort.
