M30-34: Spector surges late to claim Napa

• Nicholas Spector (2:18:28, 5:17/mi) posted the fastest men's split from 13.1M to 20M and moved from 2nd to 1st in the men's field on his way to winning M30-34.
• Jon Pierce (2:28:10) and Charlie Enscoe (2:37:16) both ran the 4th- and 6th-fastest men's splits from 20M to the finish, respectively — Pierce climbing from 7th to 5th among men, Enscoe surging from 19th to 10th.
• Joe Niemiec (2:26:12) ran the 3rd-fastest men's split from 10K to 13.1M and held 3rd in the men's field wire-to-wire.
• A field of 139 in M30-34 produced three sub-2:30 finishers at the front.

Nicholas Spector didn't win this race from the front — he earned it in the middle miles. Running 5:17/mi through a crisp 42°F morning in Napa, the 31-year-old from Santa Ana sat at 2nd in the men's field through the half and through 20 miles. Then came the move: the fastest men's split of the entire race from 13.1M to 20M, and with it, the lead. He never gave it back, crossing in 2:18:28 to take M30-34 and the overall men's runner-up spot.

Joe Niemiec was aggressive early. The 30-year-old from Niceville ran the 3rd-fastest men's split between 10K and the half marathon, sitting comfortably in 3rd in the men's field — a position he maintained all the way to the finish in 2:26:12. Steady, controlled, and 7:44 clear of third place in M30-34.

The back half of the race belonged to Jon Pierce and Charlie Enscoe, both from Portland. Pierce, who started the day 7th among men, ran the 4th-fastest men's closing split from 20M to the finish and moved up to 5th in the men's field, finishing 3rd in M30-34 in 2:28:10. Enscoe was even more dramatic — starting 19th in the men's field and grinding all the way to 10th by the finish with the 6th-fastest men's closing split, landing 4th in M30-34 at 2:37:16. Behind them, Paul Balmer (2:38:48) rounded out the top five, completing a Portland trifecta on the podium.
