M45-49: Gilmore Dominates Napa at 5:48 Pace

• Peter Gilmore won the M45-49 field in 2:31:53 (5:48/mi), finishing 4th among all men — an 11-minute gap back to runner-up Thomas Pillow's 2:43:26.
• Thomas Pillow ran the 9th-fastest men's split from 20M to the finish, climbing from 30th among men at the first checkpoint all the way to 17th by the tape.
• Quang Nguyen (4th, 3:00:21) started deep in the men's field — 86th at the opening checkpoint — and ground his way up to 71st by the finish, logging the 57th-fastest men's split on that final stretch.
• Six finishers in the M45-49 field broke 3:20, with places 11 through 17 separated by just over three minutes.

Peter Gilmore came to Napa and made it look controlled. Running 5:48 per mile across 26.2 miles in 42°F morning air, he sat 5th among all men through the opening 10K, then moved to 4th — a spot he held through the half — before ultimately settling there at the finish. His 4th-fastest men's split from 10K to the half marathon suggests that's where he applied real pressure, and the final margin of more than eleven minutes over Thomas Pillow tells you the M45-49 race was effectively over long before the finish line.

Pillow's story was the race's best comeback arc. He was 30th among men at 10K, 26th at the half, 23rd at 20 miles — and then he turned on the jets. That 9th-fastest men's split from 20 miles to the finish pulled him all the way to 17th among men overall, good for 2nd in M45-49 at 2:43:26 (6:14/mi). David Goldman rounded out the podium in 2:59:17 (6:50/mi), while Nguyen's gutsy charge from the back of the men's field earned him 4th at 3:00:21 — just over a minute behind Goldman.

The middle of the M45-49 field was a genuine scrum. Hyojun Kim (6th, 3:10:05), Eujin Goh (7th, 3:11:35), and Daniel Wysong (8th, 3:11:53) were separated by just 18 seconds across three finishers. Further back, Rosendo So-Rosillo (12th, 3:17:44), John Mccready (13th, 3:17:56), and Michael Mccarthy (14th, 3:18:11) packed into a 27-second window — tight enough that any one of them could have shuffled the order with a single strong mile.
