Napa Valley Marathon F40-44: Johnston Holds Off a Fast-Finishing Field

• Paula Johnston took the F40-44 title in 3:09:12 (7:13/mi), posting the 19th-fastest women's split on the 13.1M–16.2M stretch to cement her lead through the back half.
• Kendal Paul's closing surge was the story of the race: she ran the 13th-fastest women's split from mile 20 to the finish, rocketing from 89th among women at mile 13.1 all the way to 36th by the line — finishing 5th in 3:16:53.

Paula Johnston ran a controlled, purposeful race down the net-downhill course from Calistoga to Napa. Sitting 23rd among women at the first checkpoint, she climbed steadily to 18th by mile 16.2 — where her 19th-fastest women's split on that stretch did real damage — before settling at 20th among women at the line with a winning time of 3:09:12. Runner-up Taushah Crawford (3:10:50, 7:17/mi) had her own strong middle segment, logging the 22nd-fastest women's split from 6.2M to 10M, but the 1:38 gap to Johnston proved insurmountable.

Third place went to Megan Kono of San Rafael in 3:13:35 (7:23/mi), who also ran a sharp 6.2M–10M segment — the 24th-fastest women's split on that stretch — and held 21st among women through mile 16 before fading slightly to 28th by the finish. Jennifer Hou rounded out the top four in 3:15:32 (7:27/mi), working her way steadily forward from 37th among women at the opening checkpoint to 28th by mile 16, though she gave a little back in the final miles.

The race's most dramatic arc belonged to Kendal Paul. She was 89th among women at the halfway mark — deep in the field — but ran the 13th-fastest women's split from mile 20 to the finish to vault to 36th among women and claim 5th in the F40-44 race at 3:16:53. One second behind her, Carla Parsons (3:16:54) claimed 6th, with Kate Kelp-Stebbins (3:18:57) and Kayla Kielar (3:21:34) rounding out the top eight on a morning where the 55°F temperatures and coastal humidity made every minute earned.
