On an overcast, humid Fourth of July morning in Atlanta, the elite women's race turned into a masterclass in patience. Tsigie Gebreselama, 25, was buried in 18th among the women at the first checkpoint — and then methodically dismantled the field: 7th, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, and finally 1st, unleashing the fastest women's closing split from mile 5 home to hit the line in 31:01 at 4:59 per mile.

She needed every ounce of that kick, because Melknat Wudu was running the same script. The 21-year-old moved from 15th to 3rd on the strength of the fastest women's mile from 3 to 4, then held on to cross just one second back in 31:02. Two closers, one second — the last mile decided everything.

The heartbreak belongs to Irine Cheptai. The 34-year-old ran the boldest race of the day, throwing down the fastest women's split from mile 4 to 5 to seize the lead at the five-mile mark — only to watch both chargers blow past in the final stretch. She settled for 3rd in 31:10, eight seconds adrift. Gladys Kwamboka Mong'are ran a steady, tidy race — 11th early, 4th at the line in 31:36, backed by the 4th-fastest women's split on that same mile-4-to-5 stretch where Cheptai attacked.

Behind the podium, the racing stayed ferocious. Stacy Chepkemboi Ndiwa closed with the 4th-fastest women's finishing split to edge Maurine Jepkoech Chebor for 5th, both timed at 31:54, while Selah Jepleting Busienei took 7th over Gela Degefa, both at 31:56 — four women, two seconds, in a field of 23 elite finishers. Sydney Vaught of Cassville, MO led the American contingent in 9th at 32:17.
