Elite Men: Kiprop wins a five-man dogfight down Peachtree

This was anything but a procession. On an overcast, humid Fourth of July morning in Atlanta, the elite men's race turned into a rolling brawl where the front changed constantly. Kiprop hit the front by four miles, got shuffled back to 3rd at five, then unleashed the race's fastest second-half split to reclaim the lead where it mattered — the finish line — stopping the clock at 27:37.

The men chasing him made him earn every step. Kipkorir, 27, ran the most patient race of the podium — 8th at two miles, he climbed steadily to 2nd by five and held it, finishing three seconds back in 27:40 with the second-quickest 3M→4M split in the field. Dapash, just 22, was the boldest: 11th early, he surged with the fastest 3M→4M split of anyone to seize the lead at five miles, but paid for the move and slipped to 3rd in 27:42. Alex Matata rode the same rollercoaster — as high as 2nd at five miles before finishing 4th in 27:48.

Kiprono Sitonik authored the quietest great run of the day, moving from 17th at the first checkpoint all the way to 5th in 28:03 — a masterclass in negative racing. Behind that lead pack of five, Tadese Worku took 6th in 28:10 and Dawit Seare, the youngest listed at 21, grabbed 7th in 28:21, just two seconds up on William Amponsah (8th, 28:23). And a tip of the cap to 41-year-old Sam Chelanga of Fayetteville, GA — 20th in a 22-man elite field at 29:52, still clicking off 4:48 miles.
