Rocket City Marathon Women's Race: Mary Alex Gary Runs Down the Field

• Gary wins in 2:57:25 (6:46/mi), the only woman to break 2:58, after climbing from 5th to 1st with the fastest women's split from the half to 31K.
• Top three separated by just 1:28 — Gary (2:57:25), Munene (2:58:04), Magill (2:58:53) — but each ran a meaningfully different second half to get there.
• Magill, 42, lands on the podium in 3rd after leading early and holding off a field of 345 women to finish in 2:58:53.
• Claudia Brinkruff, 46, finishes 4th in 3:05:59 (7:06/mi), the steadiest race in the top five — holding 3rd place through the half before yielding a spot to Gary's surge.

The women's race at Rocket City had three distinct leaders and one decisive move. Purity Munene of Columbia, SC ran from the front, posting the fastest women's split from 10K to the half and holding first place through 31K. Heather Magill of Bowling Green, KY was right on her heels — 2nd-fastest on that same 10K-to-half stretch — and briefly claimed the lead, sitting 1st at the halfway checkpoint before Munene retook it. Meanwhile, Mary Alex Gary of Knoxville, TN was quietly sitting 5th, biding her time.

Then came the turn. From the half to 31K, Gary ran the fastest split among all women, moving from 5th to 3rd. By the finish she had swept to 1st, crossing in 2:57:25 — 39 seconds clear of Munene, who held on for 2nd in 2:58:04. Magill, who had led at halfway, faded just slightly in the final stretch but still earned 3rd in 2:58:53 — a strong result for the 42-year-old from Bowling Green. What looked like Munene's race to lose became Gary's race to take.

Behind the podium, Claudia Brinkruff of Greenfield, IN turned in the most consistent performance of the top five, running 7:06/mi pace from start to finish to claim 4th in 3:05:59. Cheryl Borden of Franklin, TN rounded out the top five in 3:10:32, posting the 5th-fastest women's split on the final stretch from 31K to the finish — a strong close to seal her place. Ninette Chapman, also of Franklin, TN, finished 6th in 3:11:49, with Ashley Schott (3:14:25) and Margaret Powers (3:14:34) separated by just nine seconds for 7th and 8th in a field of 345.
