M50-54 at Rocket City Marathon: Corso runs away with it

Jonathan Corso made this one look straightforward from the gun. The 53-year-old from Decatur, GA held 20th place in the men's field through the first two checkpoints, then steadily climbed — moving to 18th and eventually 14th among all men by the finish. His 6:46/mi average on a muggy, 60°F December morning in Huntsville is the kind of number that earns respect in any age group, and his 31K-to-finish leg was the 11th-fastest of any man in the race on that stretch. Nobody in the M50-54 field came close to touching him.

The real drama played out behind him. Tripp McCallie (3:08:04) held second place comfortably enough, but Michael Klaene made things interesting in the middle miles — Klaene ran the half-to-31K segment as the 28th-fastest man on that stretch and briefly climbed as high as 30th in the men's race before fading slightly to 40th by the finish. Matt Leeling (3:15:12) was steady throughout, never straying far from 49th–55th in the men's field the whole way.

Fifth-place Clay Dyer of Murfreesboro, TN told a different story: he was 85th among men at the halfway point and worked his way all the way to 61st by the finish, with that 42nd-fastest closing split doing the heavy lifting. Behind the top five, Jack Goldberg, Tommy Morris, and Frank Dudel clustered between 3:24 and 3:29, making for a competitive mid-pack in what was ultimately a 68-finisher M50-54 field on a warm, humid day for December racing.
