He held a steady position in the men's field throughout, hovering around 27th–32nd among the men, and even posted the 27th-fastest split in the men's field on the 2.2-to-5.7-mile stretch early on. This was his race from the gun.

The real drama in M50-54 played out behind him. Brian Odom (51, Denver) and Li Yi (51, Palo Alto) ran together in the standings for much of the race before a compelling late battle. Li Yi ran the 18-to-24-mile segment faster — posting the 101st-fastest men's split on that stretch compared to Odom's 167th — and closed the gap meaningfully. But Odom held on, finishing in 3:09:03 to Li Yi's 3:09:52, a 49-second margin that Li Yi nearly erased but couldn't quite overcome.

The biggest mover of the day was Christopher Moschella (51, Campbell). He was buried deep in the men's field in the opening miles but ran himself all the way to 5th in M50-54 with a 3:15:15 finish, posting the 112th-fastest closing split (24 miles to finish) among the men. Just 41 seconds behind him, Robert Kauss (3:15:56) and Andrzej Marszalek (3:16:02) rounded out a tightly packed 5th-through-7th, with just 47 seconds separating all three.
