San Francisco Marathon M45-49: Henderson Runs Away With It

• Adam Henderson (2:48:27, 6:25/mi) won the M45-49 field by a commanding 15 minutes and 30 seconds over runner-up Stuart Taylor.
• Stuart Taylor (3:03:57) stormed through the final stretch (18M–24.69M), posting the 73rd-fastest split on that segment among women — a finishing kick that secured 2nd place by just 44 seconds over Andrew Logan.
• Tom Berghmans (3:05:46, 4th) was the field's biggest mover, climbing from well outside the top 100 among men early on to finish 4th in M45-49 with the 80th-fastest women's split on that same late segment.

Adam Henderson, 46, from Santa Monica, made the M45-49 race his own from early on. Running a 6:25/mi average through San Francisco's famously rolling streets — in 56°F, overcast and damp conditions — he crossed in 2:48:27, a time that would have challenged the front of many open fields. His gender-place tracking tells an interesting mid-race story: he drifted slightly through miles 6–18, sliding from 19th to as far back as 31st among men, before rallying to finish 29th among all male finishers. Whatever the mid-race fluctuation, the gap he built over his M45-49 rivals was never seriously threatened.

The real drama in this 259-finisher field played out in the battle for 2nd through 4th. Stuart Taylor, 49, from San Jose, was a man on the move in the back half — his gender place climbed from 166th at the early checkpoint all the way to 96th by the finish, powered by a strong 18M–24.69M segment. That late surge was enough to edge Andrew Logan (3:04:41, 3rd) by 44 seconds. Logan, representing Avarua, had posted the 97th-fastest women's split on the 6.52M–10.89M stretch to keep himself in contention through the middle miles.

Tom Berghmans, 49, from Borsbeek, delivered arguably the most dramatic progression in the field — entering the gender standings at 259th before methodically working his way to 112th by the finish and claiming 4th in M45-49 at 3:05:46. Hiro Kubo (3:07:41, 5th) and Mike Cole (3:09:29, 6th) rounded out a competitive top six, with just over 21 minutes separating Cole from the winner.
