M55-59 Half Marathon: Eberhart dominates a deep field of 60

• David Eberhart won M55-59 in 1:30:47 (6:56/mi), finishing more than six and a half minutes clear of second place.

David Eberhart, 59, ran a race of a different class entirely. His 6:56/mi average through San Francisco's demanding course — on a breezy 59°F morning with 17 mph winds off the Bay — put him well clear of the field from the opening miles. Tracking his position among the broader men's field tells the story: he moved from 131st at the 2-mile mark all the way up to 100th by the halfway point, a sustained surge that showed he was running people down across the board. He settled slightly in the final miles but never relinquished control, finishing in 1:30:47 and winning M55-59 by 6:33 over Tony Lee.

The real drama in this group was the fight for second. Lee (57, San Mateo) and Vinayaka (58, Los Gatos) ran remarkably close all day, but they got there differently. Vinayaka was the stronger mover early — he climbed from 194th to 172nd among men in the first two miles, outpacing Lee's more measured progression. But Lee steadied and ran a quicker 4M–6M split, while Vinayaka's best segment came over the first half of the course. In the end, Lee crossed in 1:37:20 and Vinayaka in 1:37:26 — six seconds the difference after 13.1 miles, with Lee holding second on the strength of that mid-race push.

Further back, Valla (55, San Rafael) and Qiao (55, Cupertino) were locked in their own contest through the early miles, both posting their strongest relative splits between 2M and 4M. Valla pulled ahead through the second half and held on to fourth in 1:43:30, with Qiao fifth in 1:44:09. Donald Lincoln (6th, 1:45:01) and Mitchell Kaye (7th, 1:46:01) rounded out the top seven within 16 minutes of the winner — a competitive spread across a field of 60 that clearly came ready to race.
