M45-49: Elsawaf Dominates in West Sacramento

• Tarek Elsawaf won the M45-49 group in 1:22:59 (6:20/mi), finishing more than 4:41 ahead of runner-up Piotr Kaszkur — a commanding margin in a field of 179.
• Elsawaf's second-half surge was the story: he moved from 46th among men to 23rd, posting the 19th-fastest Half→Mile 11 split in the men's field.
• Places 2 through 5 were separated by just 1:57 across the line — Kaszkur (1:27:40), Downer (1:28:32), Kamai (1:29:24), and Geiszler (1:29:37) all waged a tight battle for the podium.
• Brian Geiszler's Mile 5.13→Half split ranked 51st among men — the strongest mid-race segment of the four podium chasers.

Tarek Elsawaf, 48, from Granite Bay, simply ran a different race than everyone else in the M45-49 group. His 6:20/mi average was a full 21 seconds per mile faster than Piotr Kaszkur's 6:41/mi, and he made his move decisively in the back half. Sitting 46th among men early on, Elsawaf climbed steadily through the field, cracking the top 25 by the finish. That Half→Mile 11 split — 19th-fastest among men — was where the gap truly opened, and it never closed.

Behind him, four runners from Sacramento and the surrounding region fought hard for the remaining podium spots. Kaszkur (6:41/mi) held second with a consistent effort, while William Downer of Sacramento (1:28:32, 6:45/mi) claimed third, posting the 53rd-fastest Mile 11→Finish split among men to hold off a late charge. Kevin Kamai (1:29:24, 6:49/mi) and Brian Geiszler (1:29:37, 6:50/mi) rounded out the top five just 13 seconds apart, with Geiszler's mid-race push — the 51st-fastest Mile 5.13→Half split in the men's field — ultimately not quite enough to crack the podium.

The depth in M45-49 was real. Daniel Morris (6th, 1:30:53), Andrei Beliaev (7th, 1:31:15, representing München), and Chris Cheshire (8th, 1:31:36) all broke 6:59/mi, and the top 20 stretched only to Shawn Glynn's 1:38:32 — a competitive spread across 179 finishers on a clear, cool morning in West Sacramento.
