UTMB Ultra Trail F55-59: Crawford conquers Chamonix in commanding fashion

• Michelle Crawford, 56, wins in 10:12:25 — a 16:26/mi average across 60 km and 3,500 m of climbing, finishing nearly 52 minutes clear of 2nd place.
• Brita Wallström (11:04:19) edges Sylvie Mathis (11:35:46) for 2nd, with Mathis and Karen Peabody (11:37:26) separated by just 1:40 — the tightest battle on the podium's back half.
• Birgit Boddenberg, 58, posted the 92nd-fastest women's split on the Champex-Lac segment — the sharpest single-segment performance among the top five.
• All 19 listed finishers completed one of ultrarunning's iconic point-to-point routes — Orsières to Chamonix — within the 14h 30min time limit, with Karen Ridoutt crossing at 14:30:26 to claim 19th.

Michelle Crawford ran a controlled, authoritative race from Orsières to Chamonix. Her gender standing fluctuated in the early stages — dipping as far back as 149th among all women through the mid-race — but she reeled in competitors steadily over the second half, climbing back to 127th by the penultimate checkpoint and holding 128th at the finish. That kind of patient, progressive racing across 60 km of Alpine terrain, with its 3,500 meters of elevation gain and a new high point added this year between Col de Balme and Col des Posettes, is exactly what wins these races. Her 10:12:25 was emphatic.

Behind her, Brita Wallström ran a remarkably similar second-half surge. Starting the race around 214th among all women, Wallström worked her way to 174th by the finish — a steady, relentless climb through the field that netted her 2nd place in 11:04:19. Sylvie Mathis and Karen Peabody then staged their own quiet battle for the final podium spot. Mathis, who had moved from 256th to 205th among women by the penultimate checkpoint, came home 3rd in 11:35:46. Peabody was right on her heels in 11:37:26, her 159th-fastest women's split on the second half showing she was running hard to close — but Mathis had just enough cushion to hold 3rd.

Birgit Boddenberg rounded out the top five in 11:41:16, her 92nd-fastest women's Champex-Lac split the standout segment effort among that group. From there the field spread across the afternoon and evening, with Sara Franco (6th, 12:33:00), Miwa Nagae (7th, 12:39:38), and Jannick Forest (8th, 13:06:29) each navigating the same demanding route through the Swiss-French Alps. Twenty-eight women in the F55-59 field made it to Chamonix — every listed finisher earning their place on that finish line in one of trail running's most demanding races.
